GAME RECAP: Oilers Fall in Quarterfinals, Eyes Set on 2025
FONTANA, CA — The Huntington Beach Oilers football team hit the road Friday night for a quarterfinal clash against the Summit Skyhawks. On a cold evening in Fontana, the Oilers showed moments of promise but ultimately fell short, bringing their 2024 season to a close.
Huntington Beach struggled early, failing to score until midway through the second quarter. Trailing 14-0, quarterback Brady Edmunds connected with Steel Kurtz on a 7-yard touchdown pass to cap off a 6-play, 65-yard drive with 4:07 left in the half.
Momentum shifted when Mattheo Zavala recovered an onside kick for the Oilers. Moments later, Edmunds hit Troy Foster for a 51-yard touchdown, tying the game at 14-14. However, Summit quickly responded with a 48-yard touchdown pass, taking a 21-14 lead into halftime.
The second half was all Summit, as the Skyhawks controlled the game and pulled away for a 45-14 victory, ending the Oilers' season.
Despite the loss, there were bright spots for Huntington Beach. Troy Foster broke Hunter Gray's single-season receiving yards record, a milestone achievement during the second half.
The Oilers will say goodbye to this year's senior class but look ahead to the 2025 season with determination. With a strong core returning, Huntington Beach will aim for a deeper CIF playoff run next year.
